No Magic Wand? No Problem.

Where do ideas come from? Right about now, I wish I had a magic wand to get myself jump started. But since none seems to be forthcoming, I’m going to have to do this the old fashioned way.

I have an idea folder, so to speak. A collection of lines, or ideas, snatches and snippets of stuff that hits me at odd times, but doesn’t have anything else with it. It can be triggered by almost anything and is in fact almost always random. I look at these as peace offerings from my muse. She never actually shows up to help me out, but when she surfaces, she hands me a little gem which I guess is supposed to make up for all the hair I tore out when I was stuck.

So I put them in a folder and visit occasionally. Then it’s kind of like a shopping trip in a jewelry store--all these pretty, sparkly, shiny things have so much potential if they are placed in the right setting. So you pick the pretty and you pick the setting and you hope it comes together.

If they don’t, unlike in a jewelry store, I can hit delete and start over. (Of course, my ‘delete’ is actually like a junkyard of stuff I might need to reuse someday. Because you never know!)And that’s where I am right now. What I started with isn’t working. So it’s back to the folder and see what sparks a new way to approach this particular book. Eventually I’ll get the right combination to jump start the story. In the meantime, I’ll work on another, because as authors, we can’t have all our eggs in one basket (on many different levels). So it’s time for Plan B.

Q & A with Rae Rivers by Lindsay J. Pryor

I am so excited to welcome the wonderful Rae Rivers onto The Hot Pink Typewriter today.

Rae and I met some time ago on Twitter when we discovered a mutual love for The Vampire Diaries and all such related topics. Recently she signed her first paranormal romance, part of The Keepers trilogy, with Harper Impulse. I’ve been itching to get her into the hot seat ever since. So without further ado…

Q) You have been published by Harper Impulse. What made you decide they were the right home for your books?

A) The editors are so friendly and open and this immediately came across in the way they interacted with their readers.  It was also wonderful to be able to see their photographs and put faces to their names before I submitted to them.  Once they were in contact with me, I fell in love with their enthusiasm and passion.  Between my wonderful editors and the other fabulous authors they’ve signed, I am truly blessed with an amazing team who have taught me so much.  I don’t think they realize how much I treasure them!

Q) We all love a call story. Can you tell us something about yours?

A) I will remember this day for as long as I live!  My editor emailed early one morning asking if she could phone me to discuss my submission.  Of course!  I immediately sent off my contact details and waited the entire day before she called.  Longest wait ever!  My full call story can be found here.

Q) How long have you been writing?

A) I wrote my first romance novel by hand at the age of twelve.  My mother upgraded me to a typewriter and eventually a computer which felt as though I’d struck gold! 

Q) You write paranormal romance. Why that sub-genre?

A) I didn’t pick the genre, it picked me!  I’ve always written romantic suspense novels but Sienna and her Keepers came to mind out of nowhere and insisted I write their story.  Once I started writing, I fell in love with them.  This has been a big genre switch for me but it’s been such a fun journey!

Q) The Keepers is a series. What’s the premise?

A) Three sexy brothers, Keepers, are duty bound to protect the same witch. A Keeper is a guardian destined to protect his witch and they work together to maintain the balance of nature.  Each Keeper is magically connected to his witch and possesses a unique power depending on which element of nature his witch is able to channel.  They are her fierce protectors, friends, and allies in maintaining the balance of nature. When an evil warlock threatens to upset this balance, they have to rely on this connection more than ever in order to protect each other and everything they stand for.

Q) What inspired the concept?

A) I always love an independent, feisty heroine but a handsome man who loves passionately and will fiercely protect his woman is so sexy.  Sienna came to mind first but as her duties involve a lot of shady creatures, I added a handsome alpha male, Archer, to help her.  And he came with two equally gorgeous brothers.  Three Keepers?  Why not?  After all, she’s an all time powerful witch.  The relationship between Sienna and her three Keepers is so special and unique and developing their magical connection and bond was really fun to work with.

Q) You've very carefully integrated the supernatural with the real world. What were the challenges with this?

A) I decided to opt for a real world where supernatural people live amongst ordinary people.  The challenge here was deciding the rules that go along with that as well as developing the mythology.  When I realized that their world was essentially my world and I could create my own mythology and rules real to my characters, everything fell into place.

Q) Sienna Beckham is the heroine of the series. What’s special about her?

A) In their world, there are three kinds of witches and Sienna is one of the more rare, powerful ones as she is able to channel all four elements of nature simultaneously.  Witches with this ability are treasured and protected, hence the reason she has three Keepers whereas other elemental witches only have one each. 

Q) Sienna has the characteristic red hair associated with witches. Has mythological research played a part when writing your books?

A) None at all.  Sienna’s central elemental power is fire so it felt so natural that the colour of her hair is red. Also, red hair is so sexy!

Q) From the outset, Archer is clearly besotted with Sienna. Why? 

A) He’s hardwired to guard her and they share so much history together so he feels very protective of her.  They are childhood friends that share a magical connection and a mutual destiny and over time, they’ve developed a strong attraction for each other.  A relationship between a witch and her Keeper is forbidden, cursed, and when they start to cross this line, a tragic event has Sienna fleeing Rapid Falls and her Keepers.  Book 1, Archer, picks up from here where he’s desperately searching for her. 

Q) So, Archer is one of three brothers who protect her. Is there going to be a love triangle or am I getting ahead of myself?

A) No love triangle at all!  All three brothers are duty bound to protect Sienna and they all love her but only one of the brothers, Archer, is in love with her.  As for the other two brothers ... there are two very sexy and feisty women just itching to knock their socks off!

Q) How many books are you planning for the series and what’s coming next?

 

A) Archer is the first in the series, followed by Declan, and the final book in the series will be Ethan.  Three Keepers, three stories and lots of drama, action, humour, and hot romance as each brother meets his match!

Q) Do you have any tips for writers seeking publication?

A) Keep writing, keep submitting, and enjoy the journey.  Also, social media is a wonderful way to interact with readers and authors so it’s wise to develop this platform as soon as possible.  I’ve learnt so much through all the wonderful online friends I’ve made – and had loads of fun and laughter too!

A Little Bit Happy

So as I was trying to decide what to post for today, I started thinking about things that make me happy. Not just raindrops on roses or whiskers on kittens (though those qualify!) but writing-related things that make my writerly little heart go pitter-patter.

1. Pens and notebooks. I am an office supply slut. Yes, yes I am. I heart all things office supply and I stockpile them not unlike a squirrel with nuts. I am picky about my paper and I usually only use fine point pens. (The reason for that? My handwriting looks like I gave the above-mentioned squirrel a pen and told him to have at it.) So back-to-school time is a double happy whammy for me--the kids go back and I can buy more pens and notebooks than one person can reasonably expect to use.

2. My iPhone. This one makes the list because it has my music on it.  (And, ahem, Twitter.) I usually put it on shuffle, or I have some playlists generated by the Genius thing that I use, too. Or sometimes, it's just one song I put on repeat. Interestingly, at the coffee shop where I go write, it's not the other people that throw me off track. It's the occasional weird song. So, iPhone and headphones.

3. My favorite table at the coffee shop. Oh, do I get territorial when I walk in and my table is taken! I like THAT ONE because I can see outside and if I stare off into space (which NEVER happens) there are no awkward moments where the person between me and the window thinks I'm staring at them. I have a backup table that's okay, if a little cramped. Of course, I can write at any old table. But it doesn't make me as happy.

4. The days my muse shows up. Now, I don't sit around and wait for the muse, because otherwise I'd never get anything done. But there are days when she shows up and everything just flows out, like my keyboard is connected to my brain. (Those are also the days where my writing needs the least amount of editing, too.) Those days are magic, but relatively rare--so I don't wait for them, but savor them when they hit.

5. When a favorite author has a new release. Yep, this counts as a writing happy. Because not only do I get the enjoy a fantastic story, I get to immerse myself in all things craft--world building, characterization, plot, the arcs, etc. So this is a complete win-win. And therefore, makes me very happy.

*blushing* Thanks so much, Victoria! I’m thrilled to be here in the hot seat for my very first book. I know people talk about dreams coming true, but for me this really has been my dream for many, many moons. And I am tickled pink to finally be able to share my fictional characters with everyone.



Jennifer, can you tell us a little bit about your path to publication?

I’ve wanted to be a writer since I was kid. I must say that I lost focus during those teen years. ;-) But as I got a bit older, I was back crafting stories. Fast-forward a number of years and I finally took my first step to getting published, joined RWA and FTHRW – online chapter and started entering contests. That really opened my eyes to what I needed to learn, as did joining the group’s critique loop. Eventually I started finalling and winning contests and garnering editor requests. It was a matter of writing, writing, writing. And when I wasn’t writing I was reading.



What can readers expect of Rancher to the Rescue?

I hope they’ll find it to be a fun but emotional read. I really enjoyed getting to know Cash and Meghan. And the grandma, she was a hoot. I had to work hard to keep her from taking over the show. ;-) But along the way Cash and Meghan have a lot of learning to do. It’s definitely an emotional journey for them. And one that I hope will bring a smile to the reader’s heart.



Do you still remember what inspired it? Or how the idea for the story took spark?

I loved the movie RUNAWAY BRIDE with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. But I kept wondering why a bride would dash out of the church on her wedding day besides a case of cold feet. I’d think it’d have to be something pretty traumatic. And so I played around with this idea and got to know my heroine a bit. In fact, I wrote out the entire scene inside the church, but then cut it. It was one those scenes that the writer needs to know but the reader doesn’t. ;-) Anyway she had my sympathies and I would have hiked up my skirt and run too.



Could you introduce to us Meghan and Cash, the heroine and hero of Rancher to the Rescue?

I think I’ll let Cash and Meg introduce themselves. ;-) Cash how about you go first?

I'm just a normal, average cowboy. End of story. I’d just as soon be mucking out stalls than standing around talking about myself. Long story short, I was born in the back of a horse trailer at a rodeo stop in Wyoming. I grew up on the rodeo circuit, going from town to town. I could ride a horse before I could walk. My day is spent working the ranch. Once the livestock is tended to, I break in horses for cowboys. I'm hoping that the Tumbling Weed will soon be one of the largest horse ranches in the Southwest.

Meg, how about you? Would you mind introducing yourself?

Sure. I’m twenty-eight. I’ve been working in the food industry since I was in high school. Becoming the Jiffy Cook wasn’t something I’d planned. It just sort of happened. The best part of the job is all of the wonderful viewers I get to meet. On television, I cook a wide variety of ethnic foods. If I had to choose my absolute favourite, it would be Mexican cuisine. After all, I was born and bred in New Mexico.



Which of your characters would you most & least like to invite to dinner, from which book and why?

I’m going with the easy one first and that would be the character I’d be least likely to invite, the groom. He’s a jerk. He’s all smiles for the cameras and he’s good at getting people to do what he wants, but if you go against his wishes look out.

And the character I’d most likely invite, Cash, of course. Who wouldn’t want a brawny cowboy with a lazy smile and mesmerizing eyes sitting across the table from them? ;-)
 

Which usually comes first for you, the character(s) story or the idea for the novel?

The characters. I have to know them and their backstory before they are ready to move forward. Their backgrounds sets up everything for the story including their motivations which are the driving force for my stories.



What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?

This is going to sound strange to many writers but I really enjoy writing the middle chapters. The opening chapter of a book is hands down my hardest to write. There’s just so much ground work to lay out for the reader while making sure to keep the pace humming along. I really struggle to get those beginning pages the way they need to be. But by the time I hit the middle, I’m in my stride. The conflicts have been laid out and now it’s time to see how it all plays out. ;-)



Can you tell us what we should be on the lookout from you, what is next on your schedule?

Next up is SNOWBOUND WITH THE SOLDIER. It will be released October 1st. This is a holiday romance filled with forgiveness and love. This story has a special place in my heart as these characters so desperately deserved their HEA, but there’s a lot standing between them. For much of the book, I worried if they’d get to a point where they could start to build a future. As you’ll find out on page one, it isn’t going to be easy for them.

Coffee anyone?

Everybody who is anybody in the writing world will have one message for you when it comes to writing. Connect with your character so you can take your reader on an emotional journey.

The key has to be making your reader connect with your character and care about what happens to them. I always ask myself, is this someone I see myself out having coffee with? Am I comfortable with you the character is? Are they a good fit for the story? Are their actions believable?

I find the last one the most important because I am always mindful of what motivates my characters. I like knowing what makes them tick and even though the reader may not know whether they had nightmares when they were six, I do.

There are many tools to help writers get to know their characters. The most common is to interview the character and do a character sketch making sure you note physical characteristics like height, eye and hair colour. I prefer having a chat over coffee and then taking notes.

So what’s your method of getting into your characters’ heads and why does it work for you?

Thank you for having me here and I look forward to hearing about your characters.

Q&A and Giveaway with Elley Arden

Q: The journey to publication is a unique experience for every writer. What was your journey like?

I’ve been writing for publication since I was twenty. I wrote for magazines, and was blessed to have a successful career. On the side, I wrote children’s books and had a picture book contracted. Eventually, I landed at The Walt Disney Company as an editor, but living on the East Coast with a base office in L.A. wreaked havoc on my family life, so I quit.

Having been a romance reader, writing romance became my focus two and a half years ago. I found the Harlequin message boards, where I met my critique partner, jumped into So You Think You Can Write, and figured publication was mere months away. *unhinged laughter* I had no clue! While I was fortunate enough to receive personal feedback from editors and agents, rejection hounded me. My rate of submission remained slow for two years. Then, my critique partner gave me a writing/submitting schedule, and within months, I had my first contract.

Q: Can you describe your writing process?

In a perfect world, I’m a pantser, but with the house full thanks to summer vacation and three series to complete, I have to be more deliberate. I’m now a reluctant plotter. I write 2,000-3,000 words a day, failing miserably some days. I also send the manuscript chapter by chapter to my critique partner for feedback. When the story is complete, I let it sit while I plot the next project, and then I do a complete read preferably in one sitting before I revise.

Q: Can you tell us a little about your newest release?

I love this book! I grew up in musical theatre, so the heroine’s dream of opening a community theatre resonates with me. I’m also a sucker for the girl from the “wrong side of the tracks.” But I think what I love most about this book is it turns an arranged marriage on end. We’ve all read about the hero and heroine being forced to marry for whatever reason, and then they fall in love. Well, this story is what happens when someone has the guts to stand up and stop the loveless marriage in the first place. It’s set in a quaint town with a cast of colorful characters, and features a hero who looks every bit as good in construction boots as he does in a suit and tie.

Q: Why do you write? Why romance?

If I didn’t write, I’d simply be crazy. People have been having full conversations in my head since I was a child. I’m pretty sure hundreds of years ago I’d have been committed by now. Why romance? Because I’m here (on this planet, in this body) to be happy, and love makes me happy. I want it to make other people happy, too.

Q: Where do you find inspiration for your stories?

Music is my greatest influence. For example, Crashing the Congressman’s Wedding was conceived while listening to a popular song. I kept wondering who would stand up and stop a wedding, and the story was born.

Q: How do you balance your personal life, daily commitments and writing?

Following a strict schedule works best. My kids are old enough to fend for themselves, so I put a lot of responsibility on them. They know Mom is behind closed door writing from 8:30-3:30, and barring bloody emergencies, they need to work things out on their own. This allows me to focus on my family life once 3:30 rolls around. I also refuse to write on weekends, UNLESS I’m behind in word count with a deadline approaching.

Q: Do you have any advice for aspiring romance authors?

Absolutely. Don’t get so caught up in the world of writing that you lose sight of who you are and what you want to accomplish. There’s so much “writing for market” and wanting “this, that and the other thing” that it can be crippling. I have to remind myself daily I’m doing this because 1.) writing is my sanity, and 2.) having readers talk about my books is fun!

Q: What's next for you? Can you give us a “sneak peek” at what we can expect to see from you in coming months?

It’s a busy year! My next book releases in September (and then three more before the year is through). Change My Mind is the second book in my Kemmons Brothers Baseball Series. Here’s an honest-to-God sneak peek:

Nel scanned the article, catching sentences here and there about a self-made man who acted as agent to his sons’ baseball careers. She wasn’t interested. She didn’t care how he got his money. She only cared that he made enough to buy a keystone property that was now on her radar to sell.

“I bet one of these sons owns it now.” She toggled back to the tax assessment page. “Greyson.”

“Weird name,” Rena said.

“I don’t care what his name is. I just want to know if he’s selling.” Nel typed the name into the search box and waited for the page to load. “The lumberjack I talked to today wasn’t much help in the way of information, and I totally…”

Six thumbnail images topped the search results page. In all but one shot, dark, familiar eyes stared back at her.

“You totally what?” Rena nudged her. “You wanna get with that?” She whistled. “Because I do. I would strip…”

“Rena,” Nel interrupted, raising a hand over her shoulder for emphasis. “That’s him.”

“Who?”

“The lumberjack. I mean he has a thick, nasty beard now, and he was wearing a stocking cap instead of a ball cap, but those eyes…” Her gaze settled on the pale curves of his lips. “And that mouth…” she swallowed something uncomfortable… “It’s definitely him.”

And just for fun... Q: What are your favorite television shows and/or movies? Why?

I watch Downton Abbey, Nashville and Hart of Dixie. My favorite movie is Midnight in Paris, but I like anything where people fall in love and make me laugh. I’m serious about my happiness, and I try to feed it anyway I can. The Downton season finally nearly chased me away. *cries* I don’t do sadness (at least I try not to). 

Mind Mapping – My New Toy

I’m a pantser. I sit down with a vague idea of my characters and the fact that they end up happily ever after is a foregone conclusion. Now how I get there can a slow tortuous slug that I wonder why the heck I write!

In the book I handed in to my editor at the end of May I hit a major part in the middle of the manuscript where I had no idea what to do or where to go. At that time I also had a couple of other things pop up and I realized I couldn't go on that way anymore. I had to find a way to become better organized. But how?

I was chatting to my husband and he told me about this app where you mind map ideas. It can be used for anything. For me, I’m not a plotter and couldn't see myself becoming a full on plotter. But the idea of mind mapping kind of appealed. Just type quick comments which link up to the main story thread.

It took me a while before I put that into use – I had a story to finish you see. But one Thursday night I downloaded an app onto my computer and started mind mapping. Boy was it fun. I have the two main characters of my story and a basic outline of their history. The good thing is I can add to it whenever I want.

I’m looking forward to start mind mapping the actual story and I feel this is something that will work for me because I find once I start typing things about characters the more they start talking and I can get all the information I need down.

Author Bio:

On her very first school report her teacher said ‘Nicole likes to tell her own stories’.

It wasn’t until after the birth of her daughter and after having fun on the community board of eharlequin.com that she finally decided to take the plunge and write a book.

The stories she writes are contemporary romances with either a medical setting or in the boardrooms of high powered business. Nicole enjoys taking two characters and creating unique situations for them.

Apart from writing Nicole is busy looking after her very own hero – her wonderfully supportive husband, and her two fabulous kids.
